Get a Free Repair Kit For Recalled Roman Shades and Blinds

On Monday, December 15, 2009, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission announced a large recall of Roman shades and roll-up style blinds. The concern with the blinds is that children can get caught in the cord, and strangle themselves to death.

In an interview with Matt Lauer of The Today Show, Inez Tenenbaum, the CPSC Chairman, said, "Parents need to understand that these are hidden dangers, that a child can get entangled or strangled on these cords very quickly."

As a result of the recall, a free window covering repair kit is being offered to help prevent further deaths from Roman shades or roll-up blinds.

If your roll-up blinds or Roman shades were purchased at Walmart, Target, Pottery Barn, JCPenney, or IKEA, consumers can contact the retailer directly for a free window covering repair kit.

Those who are unsure where their roll-up blinds or Roman shades were purchased can contact the Window Covering Safety Council at 1-800-506-4636 to get a free repair kit.

While waiting for the free repair kit that makes the blinds safe for children, the CPSC recommends that parents take some additional steps to increase safety of the blinds:

Do not place furniture or cribs near windows, where children can climb around or access the cords.

Make loose cords inaccessible, or remove them until the repair kit arrives.
